These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do you send it down from the clouds, or We send it down? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
