The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and warn 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And pollution shun. 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 And made things easy for them. 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
