The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 by the day, when it displays it, 3 By the night when it envelopeth it, 4 The heavens and its architecture, 5 by the earth and Who spread it, 6 by the soul and Who shaped it 7 And inspired it [with discernment of] its wickedness and its righteousness, 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness]. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 when the most wicked man among them rose up. 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
