The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 But never. It is pure white flame 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 except those who are steadfast 22 [and] who incessantly persevere in their prayer 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
