The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he had thought and calculated. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
