The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 and by that (Power) which created the male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 So for one who gave and practised piety 5 And accepts the best, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 But save him who fears 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High. 20 He verily will be content. 21
