The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ When the Terror descends 1 – and then there will be no one to deny its occurrence – 2 abasing [some,] exalting [others]! 3 When the earth is violently shaken 4 and the mountains crumbled, 5 So that they shall be as scattered dust. 6 [on that Day] you shall be divided into three groups. 7 Thus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right: oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right! 8 And there shall be such as will have lost themselves in evil: oh, how [unhappy] will be they who have lost themselves in evil! 9 And the preceders are the preceders. 10 These are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah), 11 In the Gardens of Pleasure, 12 A number of the earlier peoples, 13 And a few of those of later time. 14 Seated on couches wrought in gold and encrusted with precious stones, 15 reclining on them, arrayed face to face; 16 they will be waited on by ageless youths 17 With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring 18 They shall not be affected with headache thereby, nor shall they get exhausted, 19 And fruit that they prefer 20 Bird meats that they relish, 21 and wide-eyed houris 22 like hidden pearls, 23 A reward for what they used to do. 24 There they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin, 25 Except the saying, “Peace, peace.” 26 And those on the right – how (fortunate) are those on the right! 27 They shall recline on high amidst lote trees without thorns 28 And [banana] trees layered [with fruit] 29 Lengthened shadows, 30 And water flowing constantly, 31 And fruits numberless, 32 unfailing, unforbidden, 33 And maidens incomparable. 34 for, behold, We shall have brought them into being in a life renewed, 35 Then We have made them virgins, 36 Loving companions matched in age, 37 For the companions of the right [who are] 38
