(The nation of) Aad belied their Messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 124 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 125 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 Do you build on every height a monument? Vain is it that you do: 128 And take for yourselves palaces and fortresses that you might abide eternally? 129 "And when ye exert your strong hand, do ye do it like men of absolute power? 130 So fear you God, and obey you me; 131 Fear Him who has given you all the things you know. 132 succoured you with flocks and sons, 133 and gardens, and springs -- 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 [But] they answered. "It is all one to us whether thou preachest [something new] or art not of those who [like to] preach. 136 “This is nothing but the tradition of former people.” 137 And we shall not be doomed. 138 So they cried him lies; then We destroyed them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 139 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 140
