The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 Assuredly We have created man in trouble. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
