Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha, Meem. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 On the Day We inflict the direst scourge upon all sinners, We will certainly exact retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
