Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 I swear by the illustrious Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 On this night, every absolute command coming from Us becomes distinguishable. 4 By command, from Our Presence. For We (ever) send (revelations), 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "He is a madman, taught by others!" 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 "Send the servants of God with me. I am a trustworthy Messenger sent to you. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
