Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if ye would be sure. 7 There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 That shall overtake men; this is a painful punishment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ Indeed before that We subjected the Pharaonites to the same test. A noble Messenger came to them 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 and [all that] life of ease in which they used to delight! 27 Even so (it was), and We made it an inheritance for other folk; 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
