A crowd of earlier generations 39 And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later times (generations). 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
