The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you (Prophet Muhamad), the cloaked, 1 Arise, and warn, 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 purify your garments; 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Soon I shall mount him on Saood, the hill of fire. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he thought; 21 frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
