The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And accepts the best, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 in which no one will suffer forever except the wicked ones 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 But save him who fears 17 Who gives his wealth in order to be pure. 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
