The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 and the day in splendour 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But he who does not give and is unconcerned, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance. 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 But save him who fears 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
