The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 created the human from a (blood) clot. 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 taught man what he did not know! 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Have you seen him who restrains 9 a worshipper from praying? 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 and enjoins piety? 12 Do you see how he has denied the truth and turned away from it? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 and We too will call the stern and angry keepers of hell. 18 No indeed! Do not obey him, but prostrate yourself and come closer to God. ۩ 19
