The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
READ in the name of thy Sustainer, who has created 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely to your Lord is your return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 A slave (Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) when he prays? 10 What is your opinion – if he were upon guidance, 11 and enjoins piety? 12 Have you thought that if he denies and turns away, 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 A lying, sinning forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We will now call the guards! 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
