and We delivered the Children of Israel from the humbling chastisement, 30 at the hands of Pharaoh: he was a tyrant who exceeded all bounds. 31 And certainly We chose them, having knowledge, above the nations. 32 and showed them signs in which there was a clear test. 33 Verily, these (Quraish) people are saying: 34 There is naught but our first death and we shall not be raised again. 35 Bring back our fathers, if ye speak the truth! 36 Are they better, or the people of Tubba' and those before them whom We destroyed? They were surely sinners. 37 For [thus it is:] We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in mere idle play: 38 We created them not except with truth (i.e. to examine and test those who are obedient and those who are disobedient and then reward the obedient ones and punish the disobedient ones), but most of them know not. 39 Verily, the Day of Judgement (when Allah will judge between the creatures) is the time appointed for all of them, 40 A day when friend can in naught avail friend, nor can they be helped, 41 Save him on whom Allah hath mercy. Lo! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 42
