He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 or he might be mindful and good counsel might avail him. 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] 8 and in awe [of God] 9 you pay no heed to him. 10 Nay, but verily it is an Admonishment, 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Noble, virtuous. 16 Woe to man! What hath made him reject Allah; 17 Of what thing hath He created him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 By no means hath he fulfilled what Allah hath commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 [how it is] that We pour down water, pouring it down abundantly; 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and fodder, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And dense gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 And from his wife and his children. 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 Some faces on that Day shall be dust-ridden, 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
