Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And by the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 [the people of] Iram the many-pillared, 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: "My Lord has been gracious to me." 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And on that Day hell will be brought [within sight]; on that Day man will remember [all that he did and failed to do]: but what will that remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 return to your Lord wellpleased, wellpleasing. 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
