The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 saying, 'I have consumed wealth abundant'? 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or a poor man cleaving to the dust. 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
