The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 [It will take place] on a Day when the sky will be like molten lead, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil touches him, impatient, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 and are steadfast in their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
