The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Nay! I swear by this city. 1 in which you are now living 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 [with] fire closing in upon them. 20
