The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 behold, they see it as if far off; 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 His wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 Eager to roast; 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 and guard their private parts 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
