Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the Dawn 1 by the Ten Nights, 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities, 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank, 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 Nor shall any bind with His bond. 26 O satisfied soul, 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 So enter among My (righteous) servants 29 into My Paradise. 30
