And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud. 26 whereas the invisible beings We had created, [long] before that, out of the fire of scorching winds. 27 Behold! thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man, from sounding clay from mud moulded into shape; 28 When I have completed shaping him and have breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall you down before him in prostration." 29 Then the angels bowed themselves all together, 30 except iblis (father of the jinn) who refused to be one of those who prostrated themselves. 31 Said He, 'What ails thee, Iblis, that thou art not among those bowing?' 32 (Iblis) said: "I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape." 33 Said He, 'Then go thou forth hence; thou art accursed. 34 And verily on thee shall be the curse till the Day of Requital. 35 He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected." 36 Allah said: "Then, verily, you are of those reprieved, 37 "Till the Day of the time appointed." 38 He said: My Lord! because Thou hast made life evil to me, I will certainly make (evil) fair-seeming to them on earth, and I will certainly cause them all to deviate 39 "Except Thy servants among them, sincere and purified (by Thy Grace)." 40 God said, "This is the path which leads straight to Me. 41 and you have no authority over My servants except the erring ones who follow you. 42 And surely Hell is the promised place of them all: 43 It has seven gates; for every gate there shall be a separate party of them. 44
