۞ [The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship 22 Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell; 23 “And stop them they are to be questioned.” 24 How is it that you are not helping one another? 25 Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment); 26 and approach each other with questions, 27 These say, 'Why, you of old would come to us from the right hand.' 28 They will say: "No, you were the ones who would not believe. 29 We had no power over you. In fact, you were a people rebellious. 30 and so we became deserving of the Word of our Lord that we shall be made to suffer chastisement. 31 So we led you astray, for we ourselves were erring. 32 So all of them on that day are sharers in the chastisement. 33 Lo! thus deal We with the guilty. 34 They were the ones, who on being told, "God is only One," become puffed-up with pride 35 and said, "Should we give up our idols for the sake of an insane poet". 36 Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him). 37 Now certainly you shall be tasting the painful chastisement, 38 although you shall not be requited for aught but what you were wont to do. 39 But the sincere servants of God 40 there is waiting for them a known provision; 41 Fruits; and they will be honored 42 (They will live) in the bountiful gardens, 43 Facing each other on Thrones (of Dignity): 44 With cups from a flowing stream being passed around, 45 White, delicious to those who drink. 46 Neither dulling the senses nor intoxicating, 47 And with them shall be damsels of refraining looks, large-eyed 48 like closely guarded pearls. 49 And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other. 50 Said one of the speakers: "I had a friend 51 who used to ask, 'Do you really believe that 52 Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book? 53 He shall say: Will you look on? 54 Then, he will look and see him in the midst of Hell. 55 He will say to him: -- By Allah, you almost ruined me. 56 If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in [to Hell]. 57 (Another will say:)"Is it true, we are not going to die 58 except for our first death, and are we not chastised? 59 Verily this! that is the supreme achievement. 60 It is for the like of this that all should strive. 61 Is this not a better reward than the tree of Zaqqum 62 which We have made as a torment for the unjust? 63 For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hellfire: 64 Its spathes are like the prickly pear. 65 and they eat of it, and of it fill their bellies, 66 And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water 67 then surely they shall return to Hell. 68 Surely they found their fathers going astray, 69 So they (too) made haste to follow in their footsteps! 70 Before them erred most of the ancients, 71 We had certainly sent warners to them. 72 See how those who were warned met their end! 73 Except the chosen bondmen of Allah. 74
