The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the night when it covers 1 And [by] the day when it appears 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who belied and turned away, 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 And he is going to be satisfied. 21
