Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
HA MIM. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 “And I take the refuge of my Lord and yours, against your stoning me.” 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
