The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains will be like flakes of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Dragging by the head, 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. 21 except those that pray 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 and standby their witnessing, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
