The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 Verily they behold it afar off. 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On that Day the heaven shall become like molten copper, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so those devoted to Prayer;- 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a fixed portion. 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
