I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 And by oath of the night when it turns back. 33 and by the day when it dawns (with its radiance), 34 it is one of the greatest trials, 35 It is a warning for mankind 36 whether one steps forward to embrace the faith or one turns away from it. 37 Each soul is held in pledge for what it earns, 38 Save the fellows of the right. 39 In gardens, they shall ask each other 40 And (ask) of the Sinners: 41 What hath brought you to this burning? 42 They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; 43 And we used not to feed the poor; 44 and we plunged along with the plungers, 45 And rejected the Day of Judgement as a lie 46 "Until there came to us (the death) that is certain." 47 So no intercession will avail them. 48 What aileth them, therefore, that they are from the admonition turning away? 49 As if they were affrighted asses, 50 fleeing -- before a lion? 51 Nay; every one of them desires that he may be given pages spread out; 52 By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter, 53 Nay; this is an Exhortation. 54 so whoever wills shall remember it. 55 No one will seek guidance unless God wills it. He alone is worthy of being feared and He is the Source of Forgiveness. 56
