The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Indeed, your efforts are diverse. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 None shall roast therein but the most wretched, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 And he shall soon be well-pleased. 21
