Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you are certain (of your faith). 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they are in doubt, playing. 9 Then wait you for the Day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Verily We shall remove the torment for a while; but verily ye shall revert. 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 I have taken refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you should attack me with stones. 20 And if you do not believe me, then leave me' 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
