The chiefs of Firon's people said: most surely this is an enchanter possessed of knowledge: 109 Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?" 110 They said, 'Put him and his brother off a while, and send among the cities musterers, 111 who shall bring before thee every sorcerer of great knowledge." 112 So there came the sorcerers to Pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!" 113 He said: "Yes, and moreover you will (in that case) be of the nearest (to me)." 114 They said: "O Moses! Either thou shalt throw [thy staff first,] or we shall [be the first to] throw." 115 Said Moses: "Throw ye (first)." So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people, and struck terror into them: for they showed a great (feat of) magic. 116 We inspired Moses to throw his staff, and suddenly it began to swallow-up all that the magicians had (falsely) invented. 117 ۞ So the truth came to pass, and false was proved what they were doing. 118 So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. 119 And the magicians flung themselves prostrate. 120 They said: we believe in the Lord of the worlds. 121 The Lord of Musa and Harun. 122 Said Pharaoh, "You believed in him before I gave you permission. Indeed, this is a conspiracy which you conspired in the city to expel therefrom its people. But you are going to know. 123 most certainly shall I cut off your hands and your feet in great numbers, because of [your] perverseness, and then I shall most certainly crucify you, in great numbers, all together!" 124 They replied: 'We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 Will you punish us just because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us? Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance and cause us to die as those who have submitted [to You].' 126
