The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 In gardens and springs. 147 farms, and palm-trees in thick groves, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
