The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient (O Muhammad SAW), with a good patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day when the sky will be like molten silver. 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 And no friend inquires after friend 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Human beings are created greedy. 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who pray, 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 and who accept as true the [coming of the] Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 those who preserve their chastity 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who fulfil their trusts and covenants, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
