The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 The infidels, of which there is no averter. 2 [since it will come] from God, unto whom there are many ways of ascent: 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Eager to roast; 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 except those who are steadfast 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
