The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise, and warn, 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 and defilement flee! 5 And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he looked, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I shall surely roast him in Sakar; 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)! 28 It scorches people's skin 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
