The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the sun and its light 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 by the day when it brightens the earth, 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- 8 Truly he succeeds that purifies it, 9 And miserable is he who hath buried it. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 Then the apostle of Allah said unto them: beware of the she-camel of Allah and her drink. 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 He has no fear of its sequel. 15
