The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the sun and his morning brightness 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, 4 And by oath of the heaven and by oath of Him Who made it. 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 And inspired it with the wickedness thereof and the piety thereof, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and failed is he who buried it! 10 Thamood cried lies in their insolence 11 When the most wicked among them stood up in defiance. 12 then the Messenger of God said to them, 'The She-camel of God; let her drink!' 13 But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
