The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
