The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 And by the begetter (i.e. Adam) and that which he begot (i.e. his progeny); 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that never will anyone overcome him? 5 He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.” 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 But he has not broken through the difficult pass. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 or of a needy [stranger] lying in the dust 16 and to be one of those who believe and urge one another to steadfastness and compassion. 17 These are the people of the right. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
