The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And have shown him the two ways? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 Would that you knew what Aqaba is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or to a needy person in distress; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
