The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
