The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Thy Lord magnify 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 stay away from sins 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 And children present [with him] 13 And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life]. 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he beheld, 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 Then he turned back and was big with pride, 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Scorching the skin. 29 over it are nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
