The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who are clothed! 1 Arise and warn! 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 May be then be accursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 and it burns the flesh. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
