The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night as it envelops; 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 And rejects goodness, 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 So, I warn you of the blazing Fire. 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
