The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. These are the Verses of the Book, and a plain Quran. 1 Oft times would those who disbelieve fain that they had been Muslims. 2 leave them to eat, and to take their joy, and to be bemused by hope; certainly they will soon know! 3 And never have We destroyed any community [for its wrongdoing] unless a divine writ had [previously] been made known to it; 4 Every nation can only live for the time appointed for it. 5 They say, "You to whom the Reminder [the Quran] has been sent down, you are surely possessed. 6 Why dost thou not bring before us angels, if thou art a man of truth? 7 We do not send down angels without reason, and if the angels descend they would not get any respite! 8 It is We who sent down the Koran, and We watch over it. 9 We have sent forth before you Messengers among the factions of the ancients. 10 But never came a messenger to them but they mocked him. 11 Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals. 12 They do not believe in it even though the practice of the ancients has already gone. 13 Yet even had We opened to them a gateway to heaven and they had ascended, on and on, up to it, 14 They would surely say: intoxicated have been our sights; aye! we are a people enchanted. 15
